My experiences at SIFT 2007!
My experience at the Summer Institute for Future Teachers was amazing. From where I am sitting, I really could not see spending my summer any other way. I admit that I was a little nervous at first because I have never been away from home for such a long period of time. But, the experience helped to make me a better person. Now I am more confident in what I do and how I do it. I also learned that I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself regardless of what other people think.
My experiences at Summer Institute for Future teachers consisted of daily routines including classes from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, 1:30pm to 3:00 pm and 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Classes ranged from computers to lectures and everything in between.
Our 9 am to 11:30 am class was by far my favorite. I had the opportunity to be taught by Professor Hannah Sellers. Professor Sellers helped make this experience amazing for me. I could tell just by looking at her the first day we had class that she was going to be an excellent teacher. I learned so much from her with everything we did. We had many projects and presentations which I found helped me learn to become a better teacher. Instead of sitting down at a desk each day we were taught that you learn better when you are actually completing the task. Instead of Professor Sellers lecturing about multiple intelligences for example she had us make a Power Point about the article we read. Then we would present for the class and be critiqued on our work. We were given the opportunity to learn about teaching by teaching. Which I thought was very beneficial for me because I learn better when I teach.
Our 1:30 to 3:30 class was what I consider a “lecture class” which most of the time was not a lecture at all. It varied from day to day. But, we had the opportunity to do aerobics, go on a fitness walk, water aerobics and also we were lectured on “Teaching Social Studies,” the different types of teaching. We learned so many topics in this class that I really can not remember them all.
But, Our 7:30-9:00 class was a computer class with Dr. Stoloff and I thought that even though I know how to use the computer and the class was not difficult, I thought that I really did learn something. For example the Culture Quest India project helped me to learn so much about India and now I know about their cultures, beliefs and why people from India have the “habits” that they have. I loved this class because it was one of the few that was very self based learning. You really had to be able to follow the curriculum and the assignments. You also had to follow due dates. Assignments were due on certain days and we were responsible for remembering to send them in.
Not only did we learn about teaching from our experience in the class room but also at our field experience. Our field experience consisted of four days at Sweeney Elementary School where we were each given a classroom to work with. The class room that I had the opportunity to work with was a group of children going into second grade and their reading levels were not up to Connecticut standard. So they were there to bring up their reading levels and if they missed more than two days they would have to stay back. They also would have to stay back if they did not complete the summer school program. I loved working with Ms. Spooner’s group for children. I instantly fell in love with them. Watching them want to learn and try so hard read and wanting to understand made me feel as thought, I could really help these kids with something. I could help change their outlook on reading and make it a good thing. One of the boys Eric hated reading on the day I arrived. But after asking him over and over to read he finally agreed. He told me he could not read and he hated it. But, after a while and encouraging him as much as possible he loosened up a bit and read for me. Also there was another boy name Anthony who was having a hard time reading as well. But, he never ceased to amaze me. One day he picked up a Walt Disney book of stories and read the prelude. I am not sure if he understood what it meant but, he read it with such conviction and when he was struggling he would ask me for help. He tried so hard to read that book and I was glad that he did because it showed the progress that he was making.
I also thought that staying in a dorm was a different experience for me. I have never had the opportunity to be away from home and my parents for almost a month. But being away from them was not really that bad. I got to choose what I did and when I did it. If I wanted to go swimming, or to the gym, or do my homework I could. There also was no one there to tell me to do my homework or to put my cloths away or even to wake me up. So I think that because of that independence I received and having to be responsible for my own actions that I did very well. Even though I choose some nights to do things in a backwards order everything got completed on time and with as much effort as I could put into them. I thought that even though there was no one here to tell me that I needed to do my homework it always got done. I think that this shows that I was ready for this experience and I am ready to complete my senior year of high school and go onto college. It also shows that I will be able to stay in a dorm and get everything completed.
I loved being at the Summer Institute for Future Teachers and I was blessed to have been given this opportunity to come here and to learn the qualities of effective teachers. This program has confirmed that I really do want to be a teacher. I can not see my self doing anything else. Above all this program helped me to decide my future as a teacher and I think that this program could not have given me any greater gift than that.
This is a lesson plan that I created to go along with my Power Point presentation on the culture of India.

I want to be a teacher because I love working with children. I admire most if not all of my teachers that I have had the pleasure of being taught by. I have wanted to be a teacher as long as I can remember. I hope to become a teacher because I want to help children to want to learn. I also would like to motivate children to become amazing people who will be able to not only take care of them selves and help them selves but to help others. I would like to help children to learn how to be themselves and to see the smiles on their faces when they know that they have done something that they can be proud of.But most of all I would like to be a teacher because most of all I want to help children to realize how amazing they really are. Also I really would like to change their perspective on life and show them that regardless of what anyone else says they can truly be amazing people. I think that teaching is one of the most rewarding professions out of all of there are to choose from. You can help children with learning disabilities over come their disability. You can help children who do not want to learn find it in themselves to want to. There are so many rewarding things that you can help children to be able to do. I think that being a teacher is the most rewarding out of all and I sincerely hope that I can become a teacher. projectinfo2.ppt
